Soaking In

It's the Weekend!

We had a wonderful weekend! Friday night we kicked it off with some new friends at the Yacht Club, it's a quaint little place set on the water.  Some of the local children take sailing lessons on small boats and when the sun sets, the gallery fills with parents and other adventurous sorts including some of the old timers.  Simple snacks are served and refreshments are available.  The kids played and we enjoyed some adult time and funny conversations.  It gets dark early here so by 9 you feel like it's 11!

Saturday we headed to one of our new spots, Shoy's Beach with paddle boards strapped to the roof.  The seas have been choppy since we arrived, so snorkeling has been difficult.  We figured we'd try something new.  Christian took right to it, paddling out and didn't come it until it was time to go!  Rob fared well, Nathaniel and I did good too, we are just slower to acclimate I guess.

Boat Parade

Later Saturday, we attended the annual Christiansted Harbor Boat Parade.  It was amazing!  The whole downtown and boardwalk was filled with a beautiful blend of locals and tourists.  Some of the restaurants along the harbor were filled with spectators anxiously awaiting sunset and the time for 23 boats covered in Christmas lights, decorations, and even dancers to grace us all with their festive presence.  We were lucky enough to find a table at a local favorite, Angry Nate's and had a delicious dinner that included Jamaican Jerk chicken, a wonderful Pad Thai, fried Mahi, and orange creme brûlée.  It was our last hora before hitting the grocery store and eating in for a while.

Soaking In

Sunday morning we awoke early, which is not unusual, the sun rises around 6am! And we got to work on the house, Rob started a two hour and $350 journey of grocery shopping.  We still leave the stores embarrassed about the amount of groceries.  I consoled him when he got back and assured him that there are others who shop in bulk because they live so far away.  Where we are there are other stores, but the cheapest store is about 35 minutes away.  As you get closer to the East End of the island it seems the prices just continue to rise and pretty much it's only necessities on this end too.  Spaghetti sauce is a biggie!

After an early lunch we headed out to Solitude Bay, this time taking the surf boards.  No big waves, but it was an opportunity for the boys to feel out the boards and it was really good for Nathaniel especially. Christian got a little bored but made the most of it collecting sea glass with his dad.  It is so wonderful to finish up your duties and head to the beach! In all of our years vacationing at beaches we'd often wondered what it would be like to live there.  We are still in disbelief that we are here and letting it soak in every chance we get.  In the evening we sat on the porch and watched as the sun went down.  We never enjoyed the patio at night before or the view, simply amazing, we watched a cruise ship and took in the lights.
