A Day in Frederiksted

Grass Assassassins, St. Croix

Good Morning! We are up bright and early. Rob is weed eating around the areas he mowed the other day.  Believe it or not we do not have the entire yard mowed yet.  What's the problem a professional mower might have finishing his yard? Well equipment for one, we only have a small push mower and the yard is quite over grown! (there is a pic in a previous entry) I think we are going to call in reinforcements.... Christian and Nathaniel!

One of the largest problems for many on the island are mosquitos.  And the high grass does not help! Most lawn care professionals will cover their entire body, now we understand why! I get at least 5 bites everyday, mostly on the porch and in the bed at night.  We sleep with the sheets pulled up around our necks! They seem to not prefer the face, but they will get it every once in a while.

The boys snuggled up so they don't get bit!

Frederiksted

We headed to Frederiksted which is about 15 miles away, but of course it takes close to 40 minutes! It's just like taking the old roads at home.  Frederiksted is beautiful.  First you have to drive through the rainforest to get there, it's so cool! Then once you come out of the rainforest the first thing you see is crystal blue water.  Most of the time the water is still and calm there, but today it was a little choppy, not as rough as it is on our side of the island though.

We brought the paddle boards and the boys are anxious to get out into the water at Limon Beach.  Well Christian was until he met a 15 y/o skateboarder at the paddle board shop.  He is in heaven and on his board heading to the Pier as Nathaniel and I jump on the boards and paddle out.  Rob is snorkeling for gold...or Cheney. :)

We also met the skateboarders mom, a really pretty woman named Pi.  She moved here from Canada and runs the paddle board shop now.  We purchased a few paddles from her, as ours have gotten lost in the shuffle.  We were really upset but believe that "every thing happens for a reason" and today it gave Christian the opportunity to meet a friend.

Pi instructs us on where to paddle and warn us from going out to far as the winds are up causing a current that makes it more challenging to get back to shore as Nathaniel I learned the hard way.  It's not to hard to drift out a little further than intended.  We managed to get pelted by some heavy rain and paddle against the wind without getting anywhere! Finally the rain and winds dies down and we manage it back to shore, Nathaniel joking how we will not give up and we will accomplish this mission; singing the song "I'm coming home..." along the way!

Chenay

We found our first piece of Cheney today!  Chenay is a very cool find for the beach comber here on the island.  Some of the antique dishes can be dated as far back as 1700 and belonged to Danish and English settlers.  I'm sure some of it was lost at see due to hurricanes and such, but another very interested idea has surfaced as well.

As I understand, the story is that there was a slave riot on the island in 1948.  A group of over 8000 slaves blew conch shells and rang plantation bells in Fredricksted, assembling and demanding their freedom.  When nothing was declared they set out to destroy anything they could of those who hurt them most, burning and breaking what they could.  By 3 pm the next day, they were declared free and the riot ended for the most part, though it took many years for complete change to take place.

Now these little pieces of history are surfacing to be found.  The china and pottery are all different patterns and color combinations as each family had a personal design.
