Sailing to Buck Island

Our Adventure Continues...

We set sail for Buck Island around 10 o'clock in the morning.  The past two days there has not been a cloud in the sky, but today, as luck would have it, the clouds have moved in.  There is a slight chill and I'm starting to wish I'd brought a jacket.  We decided to take a sail boat vs. a motor boat for a more authentic experience and that's just what we got!

Sailing is considered adventurous by some and rightfully so, there is nothing about sailing that is expected except for the fact that you never know what to expect.  With that being said, you can prepare yourself to the best of your ability and the best of technology.  The sea, however, is much like a free spirited woman, she cannot be controlled nor do you know what she will do next.

We were making small talk on the boat about sailing, I shared one of our stories;  Rob and I have sailed once before from St. Lucia to Martinique.  We had a wonderful time.  On our return to St. Lucia, we noticed that we have used the motors the majority of the way and really want that authentic experience for ourselves.  The captain was great, he took us out into open water where we sailed with dolphins, saw whales, and felt the wind.

So anyway, I digress... the sail starts off with a small mishap, a woman's hat flies off her head and we spend 15 minutes or so circling to get it back to no avail.  Shortly after giving up we hear a loud snap and clank that makes us all jump.  The boom (which is the bottom bar connect to the mast) has a metal piece in the end that tethers the sails by rope.  It is this metal piece that has come out and is flapping around, banging around, and really loudly.  Our captain is visibly upset, hands off the motor controls, and begins to fix it immediately.  He is successful and returns to his position, but as the co-captain hands the control back a slip is made and the engine took a little dip.  Doubly distraught, I'm sure the captain is contemplating turning back, but he forges on.  Rob and I give each other a sly smile, we are going sailing!

More to come and pics to follow....
